After my last bluetooth experience it's hard to believe I would try again with another device. This time I was kind of forced to, because I didn't bring my data cable along to my brother's but still wanted to download some pics from my mobile. A data connection is much less hassle than a headset connection, so things worked out quite well at the beginning. In my head I already disconnected the devices when file 37/37 started transfering. It...
I tested XMing a little with the programms I usally use at my Solaris workstation at the university: X-emacs and the grid generator gambit. While xemacs works fairly well, using the grid generator over my 1 MBit connection is a real pain. It took about 15 minutes just for the main window to open. Then the GUI did work, but the grid itself was not displayed.
I was a bit surprised by the very bad performance. The last time I tried a remote connection supporting graphical interfaces was...
Every now and then, I connect to the university network using a basic ssh client (putty). Thats fine for compiling and running console applications, but not enough to run a grid generator from my notebook at home.
After a 30 minute research on the web I found Xming, a free X-Server for windows. The whole setup including the time to establish a first connection took only a minute, there are plenty of other programs around that should...
If anyone is waiting for the scripts I braged around with in the last post, sorry for the delay. My harddisk wrecked (really!) and I didn't have much time. As soon as I got the time and motivation I'll write the WMP .pls script in one go. I myself am waiting for it, as I haven't been able to listen to my shoutcast streams for ages. Anyway, at least I got my July post now ;)
Damn, how could this happen... Recently I switched from Winamp to Windows Media Player (no, that's not what I was referring to in the first sentence). I'm quite satisfied, but there are some things I do miss. One of these things is the ability to open shoutcast streams. These are wrapped in .pls files which cannot be read by WMP.
A way to fix this is a console application called OpenPLSinWMP by Jon Galloway....
