IT experts [personal]

Until today I thought I was the IT expert in my family. I built up our network, I maintain our computers and keep them up to date and not to forget I'm the one with the cool blog. I guess after today, I'll have to step down in favor of my mom.

Today I had the great idea to clean up my notebook, deinstalling some programs I didn't need anymore. While deleting my old HTML editor phase5, I noticed the process took much longer than expected. Thats because the unistaller seems to have quite a rage for cleaning (or the program felt somehow offended by me wanting to erase it), as it did not only erase the editor in webphase5, but every folder I had in web including all my work. Unfortunatly my latest backups were located in webbackups, the newest update I had burned was three weeks old.

At first, I wasn't that shocked. Of the 400 MB Data I lost, about 1 MB wasn't availible somewhere as almost up-to-date backup (of course that 1 MB was the most important). And I had this awsome file recovery tool.

I believe I was a bit hasty on that conclusion. Certainly I had heard a new version was availibe online, but I had hesitated installing the update. I have no clue why - I guess I thought it works perfectly fine as it is. So the recovery tool crashed trying to recover my files; seems to be a problem with the Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. As you may guess, to make my day none of my broadband-internet friends were at home. So I had to go all the way to the university to download the newer version.

I guess I was lucky though, as it seems I can recover most of the crucial data (thanks to the folks at convar that published this wonderful tool as freeware).

Back to my mom: She also makes backups of her important stuff. She even makes them every day. But she keeps them on a second computer. And on an usb stick. And every now and them she even burns them. Keep up the good work mom ;)

Update: Too bad I'm not as lucky as I thought. All files I could recover were old, so I lost my work anyway... :(
