X-windows with windows [technical article]

Every now and then, I connect to the university network using a basic ssh client (putty). Thats fine for compiling and running console applications, but not enough to run a grid generator from my notebook at home.

After a 30 minute research on the web I found Xming, a free X-Server for windows. The whole setup including the time to establish a first connection took only a minute, there are plenty of other programs around that should follow that example.

I didn't try using the grid generator this way yet, I just tried to launch xemacs. It did work, but it took quite some time to come up, no match to windows xp remote desktop. I hope I'll find a way to speed things up a bit.

This is off topic now, but let me get back to my "pls in wmp" script mentioned on earlier posts. As I should have thought of right away, media player classic can handle shoutcast streams perfectly well, even better than the windows media player, which does not show the stream metadata (such as artist and title). As there still seems to be need for the script (although not for me anymore), I still intend to write it, but it's a low priority job.
